Citation Management Tools

Citation management tools are helpful for keeping track of your course readings, paper references, and for generating citations in a consistent format.

Some helpful citation managers for biology students are:

  • Zotero: a free, open source application that collects, manages, and cites research sources.
  • BibTeX: a tool and a file format which are used to describe and process lists of references, mostly in conjunction with LaTeX documents.

For an easy comparison and more information on these tools, visit the Reference Management Guide.

Citation Styles

There are many ways to format citations based on requirements for a course, journal, or presentation. Some of the most common styles in biology and neuroscience research are:

  • APA (American Psychological Association)
  • CSE (Council of Science Editors, also known as Name-Year Citation Style)
  • AMA (American Medical Association)

For more information on these citation styles and other citation styles, see the Citation Guide.
