Media and Cultural Studies

A guide to print and online resources available through the DeWitt Wallace Library for media studies, cultural studies, and the intersection between media and cultural studies.

Getting Started?

Thumbnail: Book iconJust starting your research and looking for some ideas? Try browsing our online catalog. Using keywords (the default search style) or subject headings (key words that broadly describe what the resources is about) is a great place to begin. To search using subject headings just type into the search box su:() and fill in a subject area you are looking to learn more about. You can also use the advanced search option and change the search index from keyword to subject.

Here are some subject headings that might help you get started:

  • For film resources, try "motion pictures," "film criticism," or "Motion pictures Evaluation"
  • For broadcast media resources, "television broadcasting," "mass media resources," or "broadcasting".
  • For critical theory resources, try "criticism," "criticism--technique," or "feminist criticism"
  • For cultural studies resources, try "popular culture," "cultural sociology," or "postmodernism"

Keep in mind that resources are often interdisciplinary and may cover a variety of subjects. You can always adjust your search to include that variety by adding another subject in quotations. Here's what that looks like: su:(motion pictures) AND (critical theory).
