Academic Research Poster Design

Show off your research with an accessible, well-designed poster. These tips are useful for poster sessions at conferences, in classes, and other academic settings.

Text Guidelines

Answer these questions:

  • What is the most important/interesting/astounding finding from my research project?

  • How can I visually share this finding with conference attendees?

Other pointers:

  • The Title: keep it short but descriptive and interesting/intriguing!

  • Word count: 300-800 (trust your eye), if you can.

  • Section text: keep it clear and concise.

  • Bullet points, numbering, etc. can help to separate text

  • The poster, and especially your main message, should be legible even if you’re not standing there to explain it

  • Make sure the images/tables are of a high-enough resolution to print clearly

  • Include you and your collaborators names, institutional affiliation, and contact information (optional)
